The Rise of English Dictionaries and Author Bias

While the concept of cataloging words traces back to ancient antiquity, the very first English dictionary was published by Robert Cawdrey in 1604. In the following centuries, early dictionaries were created by solitary scholars who exercised personal discretion over word selections. Far from neutral reference guides, these works frequently showcased the idiosyncratic biases and humor of their creators, such as Ambrose Bierce's cynical definition of a dictionary and Samuel Johnson's self-deprecating description of a lexicographer. Because these texts were tethered to the subjective tastes of individuals, many rapidly became obsolete after their authors died.

“Dictionary:” noun, “a malevolent literary device for cramping the growth of a language and making it hard and inelastic.”

“Từ điển:” danh từ, “một công cụ văn chương mang ác ý nhằm kìm hãm sự phát triển của ngôn ngữ và khiến nó trở nên cứng nhắc, mất đi tính linh hoạt.”

“Lexicographer:” noun, “a writer of dictionaries; a harmless drudge.”

“Nhà biên soạn từ điển:” danh từ, “người viết từ điển; một kẻ làm việc cực nhọc vô hại.”

While the concept of a dictionary dates back to ancient civilizations, the first English dictionary was published by Robert Cawdrey in 1604.

Mặc dù khái niệm từ điển đã có từ các nền văn minh cổ đại, cuốn từ điển tiếng Anh đầu tiên được Robert Cawdrey xuất bản vào năm 1604.

In the centuries that followed, many more dictionaries were written by individual authors who chose what to include or exclude.

Trong những thế kỷ tiếp theo, có thêm rất nhiều cuốn từ điển được biên soạn bởi các tác giả cá nhân, những người tự quyết định từ ngữ nào được đưa vào hoặc bị loại bỏ.

They not only defined words, they openly showcased their creators’ opinions—like Ambrose Bierce’s definition of “dictionary” and Samuel Johnson’s definition of “lexicographer.”

Họ không chỉ định nghĩa từ ngữ mà còn công khai thể hiện quan điểm cá nhân của người sáng tạo—như định nghĩa về “từ điển” của Ambrose Bierce và định nghĩa về “nhà biên soạn từ điển” của Samuel Johnson.

After their authors deaths, many of these dictionaries quickly became outdated.

Sau khi các tác giả qua đời, nhiều cuốn từ điển trong số này đã nhanh chóng trở nên lỗi thời.

But one 19th century dictionary had a different fate.

Nhưng có một cuốn từ điển ở thế kỷ 19 lại mang một số phận hoàn toàn khác.
